Just hours after Sam Altman unexpectedly vacated his position as CEO of OpenAI yesterday, Greg Brockman, the co-founder and president of OpenAI, announced that he would also be departing from the company. In a post shared last night on X, Brockman conveyed a message he claimed to have sent to the OpenAI team.
“In light of today’s news, I am resigning,” the statement read, referencing Sam Altman’s departure. Previously, OpenAI’s announcement stated that Brockman would step down from the board but maintain his role within the company, reporting to the new CEO. However, following Brockman’s decision, that arrangement seems to have changed.
Surprise leadership change
In another X post, Brockman mentioned that he and Altman were still figuring out exactly what had happened. Initially, the board had dismissed Altman—in Brockman’s absence. Shortly afterward, Brockman was informed of his own removal from the board and Altman’s dismissal. “Around the same time, OpenAI released a blog post,” Brockman shared on X.
Brockman also stated that there’s no cause for concern. “We’ll be fine. Big things are coming soon,” mentioned the former OpenAI president. Sam Altman also mentioned on X that he would elaborate on his future plans at a later time.
Security concerns as a potential cause
According to a report by The Information, internal disagreements preceded Sam Altman’s dismissal. The core issue seems to have revolved around whether OpenAI was developing its artificial intelligence in a sufficiently secure manner.
Ilya Sutskever, another co-founder and board member of OpenAI, is reportedly concerned about the rapid commercialization of the company’s software, which Altman had been pushing forward. This development allegedly came at the expense of potential security considerations.
Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati will temporarily assume the role of CEO at OpenAI. “Mira Murati has been a member of OpenAI’s leadership team for five years and has played a crucial role in developing OpenAI into a global leader in AI,” stated the ChatGPT developer in their announcement. Murati is deemed highly qualified for the CEO role. The search for a permanent CEO is still ongoing.
