The electronics giant Sony appears to be facing a quality issue with the grips of its PlayStation controller, the Dualsense Edge, which costs over 200 euros. Numerous indications have surfaced online suggesting that the rubberized grips tend to swell and, in some cases, detach over time. Joseph Cox from 404 Media recently drew attention to this problem, claiming to be affected by it himself.
The Dualsense Edge for the PlayStation 5 entered the market here with a retail price of 240 euros—an price point where buyers typically expect high quality. Consequently, Cox, in less than a year, found it necessary to lodge a complaint about his Dualsense Edge, stating, “The rubber grips on the controller are bubbling up and peeling off like a banana peel.”
Issues with bubbling on rubberized grips
Similar reports can be found across social media platforms. On X, a user complained back in May that their Dualsense Edge grip began deteriorating after only four months, becoming discolored due to natural skin oils—”with minimal usage.” They also pointed to other complaints on Reddit, asserting that this is “a common issue with this controller and not acceptable for the price we paid.”
In May as well, another user on X mentioned owning their Dualsense Edge for about two months, noticing that the rubberized surface on both grips had lifted and formed bubbles despite minimal usage.
Frequency of use appears to have little to no impact
Based on photos shared by affected users, the extent of bubbling doesn’t seem to correlate with how frequently the controller is used. Another user mentioned on X in October that they’ve had the Dualsense Edge since its launch and use it almost daily. Nonetheless, the condition of the controller appears similar to those previously mentioned cases.
Consequently, it’s likely a manufacturing flaw that becomes noticeable after some time, irrespective of usage. Sony seems to be replacing complained-about controllers at no cost, as suggested by another X post in September. Cox reached out to the manufacturer for a statement but has apparently not received a response yet.
