Opel has to recall its electric Astra models due to a software glitch that could potentially cause the vehicles to roll backward when starting on an incline, as reported by the specialized magazine Auto Motor und Sport.
The specific term “on an incline” doesn’t appear in the brief announcement from the Federal Motor Transport Authority (Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt or KBA). According to KBA, 1,466 electric Opel Astras worldwide are affected by this recall, out of which 843 are in Germany.
As per the KBA’s statement, the issue lies in faulty communication between the engine and body control units while retrieving anti-theft system data. Consequently, the Astra Electric might move in a direction opposite to the driver’s intended direction when starting from a parked position until the brake is engaged.
Recall affects 2023 Astra models
According to KBA, this software error increases the risk of accidents. Fortunately, Opel hasn’t reported any personal or property damage related to this issue so far. The flaw was identified during internal quality checks.
All Opel Astra L Electric models manufactured between March and August 2023 are affected. To rectify the problem, authorized service centers will update the engine control units of the affected vehicles through a software update. This procedure takes approximately 20 minutes and is free for customers, but it needs to be done at the service center. Apparently, an over-the-air update is not feasible.
Opel has already commenced notifying the owners of affected vehicles about the recall. However, customers can also take proactive steps and contact an authorized Opel service center to schedule an appointment.
Internally, Opel refers to this recall as code KIM. The KBA reference number for this case is 013243. Vehicle owners should have these numbers available when contacting Opel or a service center.
The Opel Astra Electric offers a range of up to 418 km (WLTP). With its fast-charging feature, the 54 kWh battery can reach 80 percent charge in 30 minutes. The vehicle boasts 115 kW of power, 270 Nm of torque, and a top speed of 170 km/h. The Opel Astra Electric starts at €45,060.
