Developer Transforms Apple's Magic Mouse, Enables Use While Charging, Enhances Ergonomics

Developer Ivan Kuleshov has revamped Apple’s Magic Mouse. His project aimed to address several issues with the mouse, primarily the inability to charge it while in use. Kuleshov also sought to enhance its ergonomics.

The outcome is a mouse that evidently fits better in the hand and notably allows continued use while charging. To achieve this, the tinkerer had to not only relocate the charging port from the underside of the mouse but also modify the charging electronics.

This was necessary because while charging, the Magic Mouse suspends its regular functions – Apple has incorporated a corresponding shutdown feature. Considering that the mouse can’t be placed on a surface while charging without modifications, this makes sense.

Mouse transferred into a new casing

Kuleshov dismantled the Magic Mouse and inserted an intermediate part made using a 3D printer. This provides the mouse with an ergonomic shape. The click action is transmitted from the top shell to the switch in the bottom shell through another 3D-printed intermediary.

He converted the charging port to USB-C and installed it on the front side of the mouse. To enable usage while charging, the developer replaced Apple’s proprietary charging circuit with a TP4056 charging module, soldering it to the Magic Mouse’s battery.

Kuleshov assembled the mouse using double-sided tape and hot glue. The result is an ergonomically improved Magic Mouse, allowing users to continue using it while charging without interruptions. He shared his project on Github.
