Sam Altman Returns as OpenAI CEO Amid Board Reshuffle and Intense Negotiations

It reads like a soap opera scripted by ChatGPT: After plenty of drama, Sam Altman is back where it all began. Following negotiations with the board that ousted him last Friday, he’s been allowed to return as the CEO of the AI-focused software company.

“We have reached a fundamental agreement for Sam to return as CEO of OpenAI,” OpenAI wrote on the company’s official account on X.

Additionally, the company announced a new board for the non-profit organization overseeing OpenAI’s work. It includes Bret Taylor, co-developer of Google Maps, as chairperson, former US Treasury Secretary Larry Summers, and Adam D’Angelo, CEO of Quora, who has been on the board since 2018.

The resignation of the old board wasn’t just demanded by OpenAI employees but was also a condition set by Sam Altman and his OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman for Altman’s return.

Furthermore, negotiations for the details of the deal are ongoing, requesting some patience. However, considering the turbulent events of recent days, it remains to be seen if an agreement will indeed be reached. Over the weekend, discussions regarding the return of the CEO who was dismissed on Friday were initially inconclusive; on Monday, Microsoft announced plans to hand Altman the leadership of its own research division.

Relief is likely felt most strongly among OpenAI employees. A large portion had rallied behind Sam Altman and threatened to quit if he didn’t return. Most recently, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella also supported Altman, increasing pressure on OpenAI.
