Ubisoft Faces Backlash Over In-Game Ads Appearing in Assassin's Creed Titles

In recent days, certain players within specific Assassin’s Creed titles have encountered an annoying in-game advertisement pop-up. Ubisoft claimed yesterday in a statement through the Assassin’s Creed account on X that this was allegedly a “technical error,” which has supposedly been resolved by now.

The intended aim of this advertising measure was supposedly to direct players within the main menus of earlier Assassin’s Creed installments to the latest addition to the franchise, Assassin’s Creed Mirage. However, due to a technical glitch, the advertisement appeared within a game menu instead.

In an effort to provide players with “the best possible gaming experience,” the company promptly removed the intrusive pop-ups. They are presently investigating the cause behind the misplacement of the advertisement.

Advertisements across various AC titles

Previously, online reports surfaced where players expressed their dissatisfaction with these advertising inserts. One of these pop-ups can be seen in a ten-second video clip on Reddit. The advertisement appears precisely when the player opens the map view in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.

Comments indicate that the ad appeared in both the Xbox and PlayStation versions of the game. A user also reported encountering the advertisement in Assassin’s Creed Origins on their PC, likewise upon opening the map.

Doubts regarding Ubisoft’s explanation

Parts of the community now seem to have doubts about whether there was indeed a technical error. Reactions to Ubisoft’s statement on X, along with additional comments on Reddit, suggest that players fear this might have been an initial test by the company to gauge acceptance of such in-game advertising in a paid video game.

“They’re gauging reactions, but rest assured, this will become normal sooner or later,” warns a commentator on Reddit regarding the advertising inserts. They point out that similar ads are already established in Street Fighter.
