Instagram has quietly launched an Apple TV app. It brings Reels, longer creator videos and live shows to the television, lets you resume videos across devices, and is pitched as something to watch with family and friends.

The app appears to have gone live on October 23 and needs tvOS 26.0 or later. Apple TV is the last big platform to get it, after Fire TV in December 2025, Google TV in February and Samsung TVs in June.

  • Install it from the Apple TV App Store after updating your software.
  • Meta is using TV apps to push longer, episodic video against YouTube.
  • Your recommendations will be visible to anyone watching the screen.

It is a fun way to share Reels on the couch, but autoplay makes it easy to lose an evening.

Instagram just landed on one more screen in your house, and it is the biggest one. Meta has released an Instagram app for Apple TV, putting Reels, longer creator videos and live shows on your television. There was no announcement. The app simply showed up in the App Store, where Apple TV was added to the list of supported devices.

For Apple TV owners, it means the scrolling you do on your phone can now happen on the couch with everyone watching. For Meta, it is part of a bigger plan to turn Instagram from a phone feed into something closer to a TV channel, and to take a bite out of YouTube’s grip on the living room.

What you get with Instagram on Apple TV

Instagram on Apple TV is built for watching, not posting. Its App Store description lists three main things:

  • Reels, the short vertical videos you already know from the phone app.
  • Longer videos from creators, a format Instagram is actively pushing.
  • Live shows, so you can watch broadcasts on the big screen.

You can follow your favorite creators, discover new videos, and pick up where you left off across devices, so a Reel you start on your phone can be resumed on the TV. Instagram pitches the app as something to watch together with friends and family rather than everyone hunched over their own phone.

Based on the earlier TV versions, expect Reels grouped into channels based on your interests, with videos playing one after another automatically. That is great for a lazy evening, and a known recipe for losing an hour.

How to get Instagram on your Apple TV

Setup takes a couple of minutes:

  1. Check your software. The app needs tvOS 26.0 or later. On the Apple TV, open Settings, then System, then Software Updates to install the latest version.
  2. Open the App Store on your Apple TV and search for Instagram.
  3. Download it, open it and sign in with your Instagram account.

If Instagram does not appear in search, your Apple TV is probably running older software, or your model can’t run tvOS 26. Updating usually fixes it.

Why Apple TV was the last to get it

Apple TV owners are actually late to this. Instagram started testing its TV app on Amazon Fire TV devices in the US in December 2025. It expanded to Google TV in February 2026 and to Samsung smart TVs in June. Apple’s box is the final big platform to join.

The Apple TV version appears to have gone live on October 23. Apple’s release information for the TV app dates version 66.0 to that day, while archived copies of the App Store page from a few days earlier still listed only the iPhone and iPad. That fits a pattern: Instagram only got a proper iPad app in September 2025, after years of user requests.

The timing is handy for Apple. A new Apple TV model is expected in less than a month, and a big-name app like Instagram gives the platform one more reason to buy in.

Meta’s real plan: becoming your next TV channel

The Apple TV app is not just about putting Reels on a bigger screen. In June, Meta laid out plans to go beyond short clips with longer creator videos, episodic series and live broadcasts. That is a direct move into YouTube’s territory, the place most people already go to watch creators on their TVs.

TV screens also force a format change. Instagram grew up on vertical, portrait video made for phones. Televisions are wide, so Instagram has to serve up horizontal, widescreen video as well. Meta is also exploring subscriptions and leaning on the growing popularity of microdramas, the short, binge-able serialized shows that have taken off on mobile apps.

If Meta can win even a small slice of YouTube’s audience, the payoff could be big. More TV viewing means more watch time, and more watch time means more ads.

What this means for your living room

For most households, Instagram on Apple TV is a fun extra: an easy way to share funny Reels with the family, or watch a favorite creator’s longer videos without squinting at a phone. A few things are worth thinking about before you sign in, though.

  • Shared screens show your feed. Your recommendations reflect what you watch on your phone, so anything that pops up will be visible to the whole room.
  • Autoplay is designed to keep you watching. If you are trying to cut back on scrolling, a TV app that plays video after video may make that harder.
  • Kids use the TV too. If children share the Apple TV, consider whether you want your account signed in there, and sign out when you are done if needed.

None of these are reasons to skip it. They are just good habits for any social app that moves from your pocket to the biggest screen in your home.
