Spotify Family Plan verification: scan a QR code or lose a year

Spotify is now asking Family Plan members to prove they live with the plan manager. The manager shows a QR code on their phone, and the member scans it with their own phone. The code changes every few seconds, so a screenshot won't work, and members get seven days after the prompt to do it.
Miss the deadline and you can't join another Family or Duo plan for 12 months, though you can still buy your own Premium plan. Co-CEO Alex Norström told investors it's a routine improvement, not a crackdown, and said the verification work has no end date.
Most at risk: students, traveling parents and families split across homes.
Tip: don't ignore the prompt, and plan to scan in person within the week.
Backup: price out Individual, Duo or Student plans now.
If you’re on someone else’s Spotify Family Plan and you don’t live with them, you may soon get a notification with a seven-day clock on it. Spotify has started asking Family members to prove they share a home by scanning a QR code on the plan manager’s phone, in person. Miss the deadline and you can’t join any Family or Duo plan for a full year.
That hits a lot of people. Splitting a Family Plan with a sibling across town, a college student or a friend has been one of the most common ways to pay less for music streaming. On Thursday, Spotify confirmed the new check on its earnings call and made it clear it isn’t a one-off.
01
How the Spotify Family Plan verification works
The new check is simple on paper and hard to fake. Here’s the process Spotify’s own help pages describe:
A Family member gets a prompt in the app asking them to confirm they live with the plan manager.
The plan manager opens a QR code on their own phone.
The member scans that code with their phone. Because the code refreshes every few seconds, a screenshot texted across the country won’t do the job.
The member has seven days from the notification to complete the scan.
In practice, both phones need to be in the same room at the same time. That’s the point. Spotify’s terms have always said Family members must live at the same address, but enforcement has been loose for years.

What happens if you miss the seven-day window
If the scan doesn’t happen in time, you’re removed and blocked from joining another Family or Duo plan for 12 months. You can still keep listening, but only by moving to a Premium plan you pay for on your own, such as Individual.
That penalty is what makes this different from past attempts. A year-long ban means you can’t simply hop to a different friend’s Family Plan next week. For many people, the real cost of missing the check is paying full price for a standalone account until next year.
Spotify already asks Family members for their full home address when they join and when the manager changes address. The company says it doesn’t track users’ locations and uses the address only to verify membership.

Spotify says it’s not a crackdown. Here’s why that matters
On the company’s third-quarter call with investors, co-CEO Alex Norström pushed back on the word crackdown. He described the QR check as a routine improvement to Spotify’s verification methods, and said the Family Plan has been around for roughly 12 or 13 years and now makes up a pretty significant share of Spotify’s subscribers.
The more telling part was what came next. Norström said people find holes in the system over time, Spotify closes them, and the work has no end date. In other words, if the QR check gets dodged, expect another method after it. This is an ongoing policy, not a single sweep.
The motive is easy to see. Every person who leaves a shared plan and buys their own Premium subscription brings in more money per listener. Netflix took the same path with its password-sharing crackdown several years ago.
Spotify has tried this before. In 2018, it asked some Family subscribers in the US and Germany to confirm their address by sharing GPS location data. That drew a backlash because plenty of real families don’t all live under one roof.
The QR approach is a trade-off. It asks for less personal data than handing over GPS readings, since it only proves two phones were together once. But it’s less forgiving in a different way: the deadline is fixed, and the only way to pass is to be standing next to the plan manager. If the people on your plan are hundreds of miles apart, a week can come and go quickly.

Who gets caught out, and what you can do
The new check doesn’t solve the problem that sank the 2018 attempt. Real families split across homes can still trip the rule. The people most at risk:
College students living away from home for a semester or more.
Parents who travel for work for long stretches.
Separated families, where kids split time between two homes.
Grandparents or adult relatives who are part of the family but live elsewhere.
If that’s you, here’s how to avoid a surprise lockout:
Watch for the notification. The seven days start when it arrives, so don’t swipe it away.
Plan a visit. If you’re seeing the plan manager within the week, do the scan together then.
Talk to the plan manager now. Make sure they know how to open the QR code so you don’t waste a visit.
Price out a backup. If you live apart for good, compare Spotify’s Individual, Duo or Student plans, or other streaming services, before the ban forces the choice.
Contact Spotify support if your situation is unusual. The policy is aimed at strangers sharing an account, so it’s worth asking.
How long do I have to scan the Spotify Family QR code?
Seven days from when you get the notification. After that, you can be removed from the plan.
What happens if I fail Spotify Family Plan verification?
You can’t join another Family or Duo plan for 12 months. You can still subscribe to another Premium plan, such as Individual, and pay for it yourself.
Does Spotify track my location for Family Plan?
Spotify says it doesn’t track users’ locations. It asks for your home address and now uses the in-person QR scan to check that you live with the plan manager.
