Xbox cloud gaming pricing: 24 cents an hour, if you buy big

Microsoft now sells cloud play by the hour, no Game Pass needed, just as subscribers get monthly caps. Here's which pack or plan makes sense for how you play.

The short version

  • Xbox now sells cloud gaming time in packs, from $3.99 for 10 hours to $11.99 for 50 hours.
  • The packs need no Game Pass subscription, include no ads and don't expire monthly.
  • Xbox Insiders can buy them now, and everyone else gets access in November.
  • Game Pass tiers get monthly cloud caps from November: 15, 10 or 5 hours.
Quick read · 1 min

Microsoft has priced its new pay-as-you-go Xbox Cloud Gaming packs, which let you stream games without a Game Pass subscription. There are three introductory packs: 10 hours for $3.99, 25 hours for $7.99 and 50 hours for $11.99, which works out to about 24 cents an hour for the biggest pack.

Packs are ad-free, offer shorter waits and better streaming quality, and the hours don't expire monthly. Xbox Insiders can buy them now, with everyone else getting access in November. Light players who stream a few hours a month may not need a subscription at all.

  • Game Pass gets monthly cloud caps from November: 15 hours for Ultimate, 10 for Premium and 5 for Essential.
  • Microsoft won't stream GTA 6 to PCs.
  • UK and Canadian prices haven't been announced.

Streaming an Xbox game is about to cost as little as 24 cents an hour, no subscription needed. Microsoft has revealed the prices for its new pay-as-you-go Xbox Cloud Gaming packs, which let anyone play in the cloud without signing up for Game Pass, starting at $3.99 for 10 hours.

This changes the math for a lot of players. If you only stream now and then, on a phone, a laptop or a TV without a console, you may no longer need a monthly plan at all. But the same shift brings new monthly limits for Game Pass members, and the timing lines up neatly with the biggest game launch of the year.

Xbox cloud gaming pricing: every pack and what an hour costs

Xbox cloud gaming pricing comes in three prepaid packs, which Microsoft is calling introductory launch prices. All prices are in US dollars, and Microsoft hasn’t shared UK or Canadian pricing yet.

  • 10 hours: $3.99, about 40 cents an hour
  • 25 hours: $7.99, about 32 cents an hour
  • 50 hours: $11.99, about 24 cents an hour

Every pack includes ad-free streaming, shorter waits to get into a game and higher-quality video. The hours don’t reset each month. Once you buy a pack, the time stays on your account until you use it, and you can top up with another pack when it runs out.

There are still some limits. Paying players can expect queues at busy times, just shorter ones, and both the game and the device you use have to support cloud play.

The new Game Pass cloud caps starting in November

Here’s the part that affects people already paying for Game Pass. Microsoft said in September that every Game Pass tier would get a monthly cloud gaming limit from November. The included time per month is:

  • Game Pass Ultimate: 15 hours
  • Game Pass Premium: 10 hours
  • Game Pass Essential: 5 hours

Microsoft insists only a small share of players will hit those limits. Even so, 15 hours a month works out to about half an hour a day, which a regular cloud player can burn through fast. A report has claimed the 15-hour figure for Ultimate sits where Xbox starts losing money on a player, since streaming games means paying for servers, computing power and bandwidth.

The new packs are how Microsoft fills that gap. If you run out of included hours, you can buy more time rather than upgrade to a pricier tier.

Which option is right for how you play

The answer depends on how often you stream and whether you want the Game Pass library itself.

  • You stream a few hours a month, mostly games you own: a 10-hour pack for $3.99 may be all you need, and it doesn’t vanish if you take a month off.
  • You stream on weekends or while traveling: the 50-hour pack is the best value at around 24 cents an hour.
  • You want the Game Pass catalog, not just streaming: stay on Game Pass and treat packs as a top-up if you hit your monthly cap.
  • You barely play and don’t mind ads: Microsoft is still testing free, ad-supported streaming for Insiders, limited to games you own and capped at one hour per session.

For perspective, Sony’s old PlayStation Now service charged $9.99 for a month of streaming more than a decade ago. For light players, paying by the hour can now come out cheaper than any monthly plan.

The GTA 6 question

The rollout arrives just as Grand Theft Auto VI is due, and Microsoft has reportedly secured the rights to stream it. That makes cloud hours suddenly very relevant to a lot of people.

There is a catch. Xbox chief strategy officer Matthew Ball said on X that Microsoft won’t stream Grand Theft Auto VI to PCs. That suggests the web browsers and apps that normally run Xbox Cloud Gaming may not get it, and it isn’t yet clear whether streaming will be limited to Xbox consoles. If you were hoping to play the game on a laptop or phone through the cloud, wait for a clearer answer before buying hours for it.

05

What this means for your gaming budget

The big change is that cloud gaming is no longer tied to a subscription. For casual players, that can mean real savings, since you only pay for the hours you use. For heavy streamers on Game Pass, it means a cap where there wasn’t one before, and a new way to spend more.

The move also comes during a difficult stretch for Xbox, which is cutting more than 3,000 jobs as part of a large restructuring, with further layoff waves reported for the coming months. Reports also suggest Game Pass may move to a model where players pay for the features they want, so expect more changes to plans and prices.

What to do now:

  1. Check how many hours you streamed in a typical month before buying anything.
  2. If you’re on Game Pass and stream more than your tier’s cap, compare a pack top-up with the cost of moving up a tier.
  3. Buy smaller packs first. These are introductory prices, and Microsoft hasn’t said whether they’ll stay the same after November.
