Rockstar always plans the map first on its big open-world games, and GTA 6 was no exception. In 2015, the studio started research trips to Miami, and a few artists began laying out the map. Over the next couple of years, leadership pulled most of the staff onto Red Dead Redemption 2, which needed help with its ambitious systems, but that small map team kept going. Full-scale development on GTA 6 started around 2018.
The scale of the art effort has changed hugely. GTA 5’s art production team had five or six people, while GTA 6’s has 65. Rockstar as a company has roughly doubled since Red Dead Redemption 2 launched in 2018, growing from 2,441 employees to 4,711 across 12 offices.
The result is a map that’s reportedly twice as big as GTA 5’s, with more people and more to interact with. Aaron Garbut, Rockstar North’s head of development and co-studio head, put it bluntly: no one person at the company holds the whole game in their head anymore.
