Apple's first foldable iPhone goes on sale in stores on Friday, October 23, but stock for walk-in shoppers will be limited. Apple says it expects those units to sell out fast after preorders vanished almost instantly, and new online orders now show delivery on January 25, 2027.

Walk-ins are planned in the US, Canada, the UK and a dozen or so other countries. In France, Japan, mainland China and several other markets, you'll need to book a pickup online instead.

  • Price: from $1,999.
  • Apple Pencil: supported from iOS 27.2, expected around October 26, USB-C model only.
  • Reachability: coming in an update later this year.

If you want one this week, plan to arrive early, and place an online order as a backup in case the store runs out.

If you didn’t get an iPhone Duo preorder in, Friday morning may be your only shot this year. Apple now says its stores will have just a limited number of its first foldable iPhone for walk-in shoppers on October 23, and online orders placed today won’t arrive until January 25, 2027.

That makes this launch unusual. Apple normally keeps enough new iPhones aside for anyone who turns up on day one. This time preorders sold out almost instantly, delivery dates slid into next year, and the iPhone Duo starts at $1,999, so a lot of people are about to make a dawn trip to a store with no guarantee they’ll leave with one.

iPhone Duo availability: where you can walk in on Friday

Apple confirmed that walk-in buyers can try their luck in a set list of countries, and it expects the stock to sell out quickly because of what it called extraordinary preorder demand. In a statement, Apple said stores would have limited units and that it is working to get the device to customers as fast as it can.

Walk-in stock is planned in:

  • The US, Canada and the UK
  • Mexico and Australia
  • Germany, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium and the Netherlands
  • Singapore and Türkiye
  • Some Apple Stores in Italy, though Apple hasn’t said which ones
  • Macao, on launch day only

If you live in the US, UK or Canada, you’re in luck, at least in principle. Apple suggests every store in those countries will get some units. Apple Stores also appear to be opening early on October 23, which helps people collecting online orders as well.

The countries where showing up won’t work

In some markets, walking in won’t get you an iPhone Duo at all. Apple says you’ll need to reserve a pickup time online instead in France, Japan, India, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia, Hong Kong, the United Arab Emirates and mainland China.

Apple restricts walk-ins in some countries partly to control crowds and partly to make life harder for scalpers. Even the reservation route is murky: Apple’s online store tells shoppers to check back on Saturday, October 24, for pickup slots, so it isn’t clear whether any can be booked on launch day itself.

03

What this means if you want one

The honest answer is that your odds are low unless you get there early. Here is how to play it:

  1. Go early on Friday. Limited stock and high demand mean lines will likely form overnight at popular stores.
  2. Have a backup. If you leave empty-handed, place an online order anyway. Some early buyers have reported their delivery dates moving up, though that isn’t happening for everyone.
  3. Watch out for resellers. Scarce, expensive launches attract scalpers, which is one reason Apple limits walk-ins in some countries. Think twice before paying a markup.
  4. Plan your accessories. If you want to use a stylus, check which Pencil you own before Friday (more on that below).

For context on what you’re lining up for: the iPhone Duo has a 5.4-inch outer screen and a 7.6-inch inner screen that folds open like a small tablet.

Apple Pencil support arrives weeks earlier than expected

There is good news for early buyers. When Apple announced the iPhone Duo in September, it said Apple Pencil support would come “later this year.” Many people expected that to mean December, when Apple often ships bigger software updates.

Instead, it’s coming in iOS 27.2, which is expected around Monday, October 26. Support already appears in the release candidate version, the near-final test build. If you get a Duo on Friday, you’ll wait only a few days. If yours ships later, it should work out of the box.

There’s a catch. The iPhone Duo only works with the Apple Pencil (USB-C). An Apple Pencil Pro or other older models won’t work, so you may need to buy another one. The USB-C model was recently on sale for $69, and it also works with most iPads.

05

Reachability is coming, which matters on a tall screen

Apple also plans to add Reachability to the iPhone Duo in a software update later this year. On other iPhones, it’s an accessibility setting: you swipe down on the bottom edge of the screen and the top half of the display slides down within reach of your thumb.

On a phone with a large inner display, that could make one-handed use far less awkward. Apple hasn’t said whether it will work on both the inner and outer screens, so wait for the update notes before counting on it.
