The Surface Laptop Ultra is officially on the preorder bench, with sales set to begin on Oct. 16. It carries a starting price of $2,599 and is designed to go head-to-head with high-end portable workstations in the creator and developer space.
Powering the Ultra is Nvidia’s RTX Spark System-on-Chip, which combines a Blackwell-class GPU with up to 6,144 processing units and a Grace CPU capable of up to 20 cores. It also comes with up to 128GB of unified memory and a new thermal design to handle heavy workloads. Microsoft describes the display as a 15-inch mini-LED panel with high brightness, part of the device’s premium feel for photo and video work, software development, AI, and 3D tasks.
Alongside the Ultra, Microsoft announced the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, priced at $5,999. It’s aimed at professionals who want desktop-level AI performance and up to 1 petaflop of AI processing power, using the same RTX Spark chip as the laptop.
In a nod to existing Apple machines, Microsoft is offering a trade-in option that can return up to $1,000 cashback when you buy the Surface Laptop Ultra with a qualifying MacBook Pro. 01
Which buyers should consider the Surface Laptop Ultra
The Ultra targets creators, developers, engineers, and other power users who need strong AI and graphics performance in a portable form. If you frequently edit high-resolution video, run demanding 3D tools, or test AI models locally, this is positioned as a serious option.
02
What this means for everyday people
For normal laptop shoppers, the price puts it in a premium tier. If you mainly browse, stream, and do office work, there are equally capable but cheaper options. The trade-in offer could sweeten the deal if you already own a MacBook Pro, but you’ll still need to weigh whether the Ultra’s performance matches your daily needs versus a standard Windows laptop or a MacBook Pro in the same price range.
