Turn off Reddit For You? How to keep your home page on Following

Reddit's home page now opens on algorithmic picks. You can't delete that feed, but you can make Following your default and keep it there.

  • The new feeds are rolling out worldwide over the next few weeks, and the app opens on For You at first.
Quick read · 1 min

Reddit has split its home page in two. The new For You feed mixes your communities with algorithmic recommendations, while Following shows only posts from subreddits you've joined. The app opens on For You at first, and the change is reaching users worldwide over the next few weeks.

There's no setting to remove For You, but there's an easy workaround: tap Following once and close Reddit while you're on it. Reddit now remembers your last feed, so it will keep opening on Following.

  • Switch to Following on each phone and computer you use.
  • Old Reddit still offers the classic best, hot and new sorting.
  • Log in to Old Reddit soon, because Reddit plans to limit access for people who haven't used it recently.

You can’t fully turn off the Reddit For You feed, but you can stop seeing it. Switch to the new Following feed once and Reddit will keep opening there, because it now remembers whichever feed you used last.

That matters if Reddit is where you go for your own communities, like a local city subreddit, a hobby forum or a support group, rather than for whatever an algorithm thinks you’ll click on. Reddit announced the change on Wednesday, and the app will open on For You the first time you see it. One tap fixes that, and there’s a second option if you want the old home page back entirely.

How to turn off the Reddit For You feed in the app

The quickest way to turn off the Reddit For You feed is to switch your home page to Following and leave it there. Here’s how:

  1. Update the Reddit app, then open it. Your home page now offers two feeds to pick from: For You and Following.
  2. Tap Following. You’ll now see posts only from communities you’ve joined.
  3. Browse as normal, then close the app while you’re still on Following.
  4. Open Reddit again. It should reopen on Following, because the app now defaults to the last feed you used.

If it ever flips back to For You after an update or on a new phone, repeat the same tap. Reddit hasn’t announced a setting that removes the For You tab outright, so for now this is as close to an off switch as you’ll get.

On a computer

The same trick works on the Reddit website. Pick Following on your home page, and if you close the tab while on Following, Reddit opens there next time. To be safe, switch to Following on every phone, tablet and computer you use.

If Reddit keeps jumping back to For You

A few things can undo your choice. Run through these before you give up on it:

  • Finish on Following. Reddit reopens on the last feed you were on, so a quick peek at For You right before you close it undoes your choice.
  • Check your other devices. If your laptop still opens on For You while your phone doesn’t, repeat the switch there.
  • Expect a reset after big changes. A fresh install, a new phone or a different account may put you back on For You for the first visit.
  • Give the rollout time. The new feeds are still reaching people, so the layout you see this week may shift a little as the change spreads.

What’s the difference between For You and Following on Reddit?

For You mixes posts from communities you’ve joined with recommendations based on your interests. Following shows only posts from the subreddits you’ve joined, nothing else.

Before this change, Reddit had one home feed that blended both. Reddit has slipped recommended posts from outside your subscriptions into the home page for a long time. What’s new is that those picks now get a feed of their own, and it’s the one the app opens on by default at first.

In early use, the recommendations lean heavily on places you’ve browsed recently but never joined. If you’ve peeked at a few gaming or phone subreddits in the past week, expect to see them near the top of For You.

Want the classic home page? Use Old Reddit, and log in soon

If you want the old-school home page, where you sort posts by best, hot, new, rising or controversial, Old Reddit still offers it. You can reach it at the old Reddit address or turn it on in your account settings.

There’s a time limit to think about, though. Reddit plans to cut back access to Old Reddit for people who haven’t used it recently. If you think you’ll want it later, log in to Old Reddit soon so your account counts as an active user.

Old Reddit isn’t for everyone. It’s built for desktop browsers and looks dated on a phone. But for long-time users who want a plain list of posts from their own subreddits, it’s the most complete escape from algorithmic picks.

Why Reddit is pushing For You now

Reddit wants casual visitors to come back more often. CEO Steve Huffman has said he wants to make returning easier for occasional users and wants Reddit to surface relevant posts, even older ones. A For You feed is the standard tool for that, and Instagram, X, Threads and Facebook all lean on one.

This is also the latest step in a wider redesign. Earlier this year, Reddit said it would phase out r/all, the page that showed popular posts from across the whole site, as part of an effort to simplify Reddit and personalize the home feed. Reddit is also testing video and audio versions of popular posts, including some from threads that are years old.

So is Reddit turning into TikTok? Not yet. The For You idea was made famous by TikTok, but Reddit hasn’t put recommended posts into a full-screen, swipe-up video feed. For You still looks like a normal list of posts and comment threads. That could change: the company says it wants to give people new ways to explore, and its tests with video and audio versions of posts point in that direction.

In its announcement, Reddit framed For You as a first step toward discovery, and said it will keep experimenting with new ways to get around the app and to explore Reddit more intentionally.

What the new feeds mean for your Reddit

For most people, the change is about attention, not privacy. Reddit already used your activity to recommend posts. The difference is that recommendations now sit front and center, so it’s easier to lose time in subreddits you never chose to join.

A few habits keep your home page under your control:

  • Join the communities you actually want. Following only shows subreddits you’ve joined, so a short, well-picked list makes it far more useful.
  • Leave the ones you’ve outgrown. Old subscriptions crowd Following just as much as recommendations crowd For You.
  • Watch for feedback tools. Reddit says it is working on ways to tell it which recommendations you don’t want, which should make For You easier to tune if you do use it.

Some users who saw the new feeds during testing already complained, and Reddit is still rolling them out worldwide over the next few weeks. If you don’t see the two tabs yet, you will soon, and the Following tap will be waiting.

Quick answers

Can you disable the For You feed on Reddit?

Not completely. Reddit hasn’t added an off switch, but if you switch to Following, the app reopens there by default.

Why does Reddit keep opening on For You?

Reddit starts new users of the redesign on For You. After that, it opens on whichever feed you used last, so close the app while on Following.

Is Old Reddit going away?

Reddit plans to limit Old Reddit access to people who have used it recently, so log in soon if you want to keep it.
