How to connect Strava to Gemini, and the questions worth asking

Strava subscribers in the US can now let Gemini read their workouts. Here is the setup, what Gemini can see, and where its answers fall short.

The short version

  • Strava subscribers in the US can now link their account to Google Gemini through Personal Intelligence and connected apps.
  • The link is optional and read-only, and it works on every Gemini plan, including the free one, as long as you pay for Strava.
  • Gemini can answer questions about pace, heart rate, races, streaks and weather using your own activity history.
  • Early testers found Gemini sometimes sees only recent months of data and gives flattering, generic advice, so check the numbers.
Quick read · 1 min

Strava subscribers in the US can now connect their accounts to Google Gemini and ask questions about their own workouts, such as whether they run faster at the same heart rate or how much heat slowed a long run.

  • Setup: in Gemini, open Personal Intelligence, choose Strava under connected apps, sign in and authorize.
  • Cost: works on every Gemini plan, but you need a paid Strava subscription.
  • Privacy: read-only, and you can disconnect at any time from Connected Apps.

Gemini can read your activities, metrics, plans, gear and clubs, and parts of your chats may be shared with Strava. Early testers found it sometimes sees only recent months of history and gives generic advice, so ask specific questions and check the numbers. The UK and Canada have no date yet.

Your Strava log can now talk back. Strava has launched a connection that lets Google Gemini read your workouts and answer questions about them in plain English, from whether you are getting fitter to how much a hot day slowed your long run. It started rolling out in the US on October 28 for Strava subscribers.

Here is how to connect Strava to Gemini in short: open Gemini, go to Personal Intelligence, pick Strava from the list of connected apps, sign in to Strava and approve the link. It takes about a minute. Below are the full steps, what Gemini gets to see, the questions that give useful answers, and the limits early testers ran into.

How to connect Strava to Gemini: step by step

You can connect Strava to Gemini from the Gemini app on your phone or from Gemini on the web. Before you start, check two things: you need a paid Strava subscription, and you need to be in the US, where the rollout began. Any Gemini plan works, free or paid.

  1. Open Gemini and open Personal Intelligence.
  2. Find Strava in the list of connected apps and select it.
  3. Sign in with your Strava account when the login page appears.
  4. Read the consent screen and authorize Gemini to connect to Strava.

That’s it. Start a new chat and ask about your training. If Strava doesn’t appear in the list, the feature may not have reached your account yet, since it is rolling out gradually.

You can also start the connection from the Strava side. In the Strava mobile app it sits in a section called AI Assistants, and on the Strava website it lives under the MCP settings. MCP, short for Model Context Protocol, is the open standard that lets AI assistants plug into other apps. Strava uses the same system for its Claude connection, launched earlier this year.

What Gemini can see, and what it can’t touch

The connection is read-only. Gemini can look at your data to answer questions, but it cannot add, edit or delete activities. That is the part most people worry about, and it is the right default.

It does see a lot, though. The consent screen says Gemini will read your workout activities, performance metrics, training plans, gear, clubs and profile details. It also says parts of your conversation, along with your name and email address, may be shared with Strava and handled under Strava’s privacy policy. If you would rather your race chats stay out of Strava’s hands, think about that before you tap authorize.

A sensible habit: connect, ask what you need for a training block, and review the link every few months. If you stop using it, remove it, the same way you would clear out old app permissions on your phone.

How to disconnect Strava from Gemini

You can switch it off at any time. In Gemini, open Connected Apps and remove Strava. You can also withdraw access from Strava’s own settings.

The best questions to ask Gemini about your Strava data

Strava suggests a handful of starting points. In our own words, they cover:

  • Fitness trends: whether you now run faster at the same heart rate, looking at volume, consistency and the mix of sports you do.
  • Race breakdowns: a mile-by-mile look at how your last race went and where your effort changed.
  • Cross-training: whether time in the gym is helping or hurting your running.
  • Personal bests: your quickest 10K this year compared with your all-time best, with the activity behind each.
  • Weather: how much heat, humidity or wind cost you on a particular day. Conditions from each activity are now included.
  • Streaks: your current and longest streak in each sport, and when the current one began.

The more specific the question, the better the answer. Name the dates, the race and the sport. Instead of asking whether you are doing well, ask how your average easy-run pace in October compares with August at a similar heart rate.

A few prompts that tend to work well because they give Gemini clear limits:

  • Compare my long runs in the six weeks before my last two races: distance, pace and how often I did them.
  • List my rides over two hours since June and show average speed against the temperature for each.
  • Which week this year had my highest training volume, and what did the following week look like?

Each one names a time window, a sport and the exact numbers you want, which leaves less room for vague, flattering summaries. If an answer looks off, ask Gemini which activities it used. That quickly shows whether it is missing older data.

Where Gemini’s Strava answers fall short

One early tester, a keen marathon runner, found real problems worth knowing about. Asked to analyze every marathon since 2019, Gemini said there was only one. The tester had logged at least eight. Gemini explained that it could only see roughly the last few months of activity at once, because of how the data is fetched in pages, and suggested asking about specific dates and places instead. Even then, it sometimes referenced older races and sometimes didn’t.

The same tester found Gemini quick to agree and slow to question. Its first answer on heart-rate gains skipped the obvious factor of summer heat until the runner raised it, and then Gemini agreed right away. General advice, such as running easy days slower or adding a threshold session, was sound but the kind any running guide offers.

So treat Gemini as a fast research assistant, not a coach. It pulls numbers from your history far faster than scrolling through months of activities, and its suggested follow-up questions can point you to comparisons you hadn’t thought of. Check any number that matters before you change your training around it.

What this means for runners and riders outside the US

For now, the Gemini connection is US-only. Strava says it plans to expand to more countries but hasn’t given dates, so subscribers in the UK and Canada will have to wait. Strava has more than 200 million users in over 185 countries, so the wider rollout is the bigger story to watch.

Inside the US, the deal is good value if you already pay for Strava: there’s no extra charge on the Gemini side, and the free Gemini plan works. If you prefer Claude, Strava’s earlier connector does a similar job there. Whichever assistant you choose, the same advice applies: ask narrow questions, sanity-check the answers and keep your own judgment in charge of your training.

Quick answers

Do I need Gemini Advanced or a paid Google plan?

No. Strava says the connection works on all Gemini plans. You do need a paid Strava subscription.

Can Gemini change or delete my Strava activities?

No. The connection is read-only, so Gemini can read your data but cannot add, edit or remove anything.

Is Strava in Gemini available in the UK or Canada?

Not yet. It is rolling out in the US first, and Strava hasn’t said when other countries will get it.
