The short version

  • iOS 27 adds Call Context, an Apple Intelligence tool that shows details like flight codes and order numbers when you call a business.
  • It matches the number you dial against your apps, such as Mail and Wallet, and doesn't listen to the conversation.
  • Call Context needs an Apple Intelligence iPhone, meaning an iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max or any iPhone 16 or later, and works in English first.
  • Hold Assist and Call Screening arrived with iOS 26 last year and can be switched on today under Settings, Apps, Phone.
Quick read · 1 min

Apple's iOS 27 added Call Context to the iPhone Phone app. When you call a business, it pulls matching details from apps like Mail, Wallet and Maps onto the call screen, so an airline's confirmation code or a store's order number is right there. It can even read the code out loud to the agent.

It works from the number you dial, not by listening to the call. You'll need an Apple Intelligence iPhone, which means an iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max or any iPhone 16 or later, and English is the only language at launch.

  • Hold Assist alerts you when someone comes back after a hold.
  • Call Screening asks unknown callers who they are before the phone rings.
  • Both came with iOS 26 and sit under Settings, Apps, Phone.

You call an airline to change a flight, and before the agent even asks, your confirmation code is already sitting on the call screen. That’s Call Context, the standout addition among the Phone app iOS 27 features, and your iPhone can even offer to read the code out loud for you.

If you’ve ever put a support agent on speaker while you dig through your inbox for an order number, this is aimed squarely at you. It also caps a two-year rebuild of the iPhone’s most boring app: last year brought tools to beat spam calls and endless hold music, and this year Apple added a helper for the call itself. Here’s what each one does, which iPhones get it, and how to turn it on.

01

How Call Context finds your codes during a call

Call Context looks up who you’re calling and pulls matching details from your other apps onto the call screen. It’s an Apple Intelligence feature, so the work happens through Apple’s own AI system rather than a third-party app.

The lookup covers apps such as Mail, Wallet and Maps. Depending on the business, you might see:

  • a flight confirmation code when you ring an airline
  • an order number and order details when you call a store about a recent purchase
  • appointment times or other booking information

In hands-on tests after the iOS 27 release, a call to Southwest Airlines brought up the flight booking straight away, with a second Southwest trip stacked underneath as another card. If the first card isn’t the one you need, the right one is usually a single tap away. The iPhone also offered to speak the confirmation number to the agent, which saves you spelling out a long string of letters and digits.

Call Context isn’t only for customer service lines. Since iOS 27 arrived, it has flagged a saved birthday, with a fireworks animation, when you call that person on the day. The iOS 27.2 update in late October added anniversaries too, pulled from the date you’ve stored on the contact card.

02

Is Call Context listening to my calls?

No. Call Context bases its suggestions on the phone number you dial, not on the audio of the conversation. It checks that number against information already on your device, like an airline’s emails, and shows what matches.

That design matters for privacy. A tool that transcribed every call to work out what you needed would be a much bigger ask. Matching against the number keeps the feature closer to a smart address book than a call recorder.

It also only kicks in for calls where your apps hold something relevant. Ring a friend and you won’t get a stack of order numbers, just the occasional birthday or anniversary nudge if you’ve saved one.

Which iPhones get the new Phone app features

iOS 27 itself runs on a wide range of phones: the iPhone 11 family and newer, plus the second-generation iPhone SE and later. Apple released it to the public on Monday, September 14, and Call Context was part of that release rather than a later add-on.

Call Context has a tighter limit because it needs Apple Intelligence. That means an iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max, or any iPhone 16 model or later. Apple Intelligence iPads, Macs and Apple Watch models also support it. So an iPhone 11 can install iOS 27 but won’t show Call Context.

Language is the other catch. Call Context works in English at launch, and Apple says more languages are planned later. Availability can also vary by country, so readers in the UK and Canada should check their device language is set to English if the cards don’t appear.

Hold Assist and Call Screening are older features that came with iOS 26, so they don’t need iOS 27 to work.

Hold Assist and Call Screening: last year’s tools worth turning on

Hold Assist spots when you’ve been put on hold so you can put the phone down and walk away. When the call is placed on hold, a pop-up lets you start Hold Assist with a tap. Once a real person comes back on the line, your iPhone alerts you to pick up again.

Call Screening deals with spam. When a number that isn’t saved in your contacts calls, your iPhone asks the caller who they are and why they’re calling before it rings. Their answer shows up on your Lock Screen, and you decide whether to pick up or send them to voicemail.

Both live in the same place:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Scroll down and tap Apps.
  3. Choose Phone.
  4. Turn on the Hold Assist detection toggle and the Call Screening option.
05

What this means for your next customer service call

Put together, the three features cover the worst parts of calling a business. Call Screening keeps junk callers away from your ringtone. Hold Assist frees you from listening to hold music. Call Context means you’re not scrambling for a booking code when an agent finally answers.

The practical upshot is less app switching mid-call. You don’t need to put the agent on speaker, open Mail, search for the right email and read a code back letter by letter. For anyone who regularly deals with airlines, delivery firms or banks, that adds up to real minutes saved.

To get the most from Call Context, keep booking confirmations in Apple’s own apps, such as Mail and Wallet, since those are the places it checks. If you get receipts somewhere else, the feature has less to work with.

One caution: the cards are suggestions, not proof. If you have several bookings with the same company, check you’re reading out the right one before you share it.

No. Both arrived with iOS 26 last year. You can turn them on in Settings, then Apps, then Phone.

Why don’t I see Call Context on my iPhone?

It needs an Apple Intelligence iPhone, such as an iPhone 15 Pro or any iPhone 16 or later, running iOS 27 with English as the language.

Does Call Context record what I say?

No. It matches the number you’re calling against details in your apps and doesn’t use the audio of the call.
