iPhone Duo pre-order: choose color and carrier before launch day

Apple's Get Ready tool let buyers save a color, storage size and carrier ahead of time. It still wasn't enough: online orders backed up into January within minutes.

Apple let iPhone Duo buyers prepare their order early with Get Ready, which saved a color, storage size, carrier, trade-in and payment method in the Apple Store app or website. When pre-orders opened on October 16 at 5 a.m. PT, it didn't help much: delivery dates for every model slid into January within minutes, and launch-day pickup stock vanished.

The reason is that most early stock went to shops. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported that Apple sent roughly 80% of its first Duos to its stores, which sold them to people who lined up on October 23.

  • Price: $1,999 for 256GB, up to $3,199 for 2TB.
  • Colors: Night Sky and Star White.
  • Best bet now: check in-store pickup often and stay flexible on color and storage.

Apple keeps releasing small restocks, so a January order may still arrive sooner.

Buyers who saved their iPhone Duo order in advance with Apple’s Get Ready tool still found delivery dates sliding into January, sometimes before they could finish checking out. Apple’s first foldable sold out online within minutes of pre-orders opening on October 16, and the scramble has moved to Apple Store shelves.

If you’re shopping for one now, how the iPhone Duo pre-order played out tells you where the phones actually are. At $1,999 to start, this is a big purchase, and knowing which color, storage size and carrier setup you want before stock pops up is the difference between getting one this year and waiting until 2027.

How the iPhone Duo pre-order Get Ready tool worked

Get Ready let you set up an iPhone Duo order before sales opened, so you could check out in a tap or two. Apple switched it on in mid-October in its online store and the Apple Store app, a few days before pre-orders started. It didn’t place an order or hold a phone for you. It simply saved your choices.

Inside it, you could pick:

  • a color, either Night Sky or Star White, and a storage size from 256GB up to 2TB;
  • your carrier situation, plus any carrier offers you qualified for;
  • an AppleCare+ plan, accessories and a trade-in;
  • how to pay, whether in full, with Apple Card financing or through Apple’s upgrade program;
  • your shipping and billing addresses.

Apple has offered the same kind of pre-order prep for several years. With the Duo, there were warnings well before launch that supply would be tight, with multiple reports of production problems. That made Get Ready look like the only sensible way in.

Why saved orders still landed in January

Pre-orders opened at 5 a.m. Pacific, 8 a.m. Eastern, on Friday, October 16. Shipping estimates for both colors and every storage size moved into January almost at once. About half an hour after orders opened, Apple’s US store was showing a January 25 delivery date for all models, and store pickup stock for launch day had run out too.

Some buyers said on social media that their dates still slipped even though they’d completed Get Ready as Apple suggested. The tool speeds up checkout, but it can’t create phones that don’t exist. Apple called demand “nothing short of extraordinary” without saying how many orders it took.

The pricing didn’t put people off. The base 256GB model costs $1,999 and the fully loaded 2TB version costs $3,199. For comparison, the iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199.

Where the phones actually went

The biggest reason online orders vanished so fast is that most early stock never went online. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that Apple sent roughly 80% of its first iPhone Duo inventory to its retail stores, leaving only about 20% for deliveries and reserved in-store pickups. His educated guess was that most stores got somewhere between 50 and 250 units.

Apple confirmed ahead of launch that stores would have a limited number of Duos for walk-in customers in countries including the US, the UK and Canada. On launch day, October 23, plenty of people who lined up early walked out with one, though many city stores had long lines. Gurman also reported that Apple had first planned a narrower launch, only in the US and China at the end of November, before choosing to go earlier.

What this means if you still want an iPhone Duo

For anyone who missed the first wave, the practical takeaway is that your best odds are in a store, not in a January delivery queue. Apple has been releasing small batches of stock for in-store pickup, and they can disappear within minutes.

  • Check pickup stock often. Open the Apple Store app or website, pick the Duo and look at pickup availability at stores near you. Independent stock checkers that read Apple’s public pickup data can help, but always confirm on Apple’s own site before you travel.
  • Be flexible. If you’ll take either color or a different storage size, you have far more chances, because each configuration restocks at different times.
  • Keep an existing order. Some buyers have seen their pre-order dates move earlier, so don’t cancel a January order until you have a phone in hand.
  • Have your setup ready. The same choices Get Ready saved, payment, carrier and trade-in, still speed up checkout when a pickup slot appears.

Early owners have also reported some software quirks and a small number of cracked inner screens. Apple is offering free walk-in replacements for defective screens, though limited stock means a replacement may not be on hand right away. Apple Pencil support arrived in a software update three days after launch.

What happens next

Supply is the story to watch. If shipping dates start moving earlier than late January and stores keep getting restocks, Apple is catching up with demand. If not, expect the in-store hunt to run into the holidays. Gurman says some people in places like Los Angeles have still been camping out overnight hoping to buy one.
