Is GTA 6 60fps on PS5? What’s confirmed, and the 40fps hope

Rockstar still won't talk frame rates before the November 19 launch. Here's what the footage, the leaks and the hardware actually tell PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox owners.

The short version

  • Rockstar has not confirmed any 60fps or performance mode for GTA 6 on PS5, PS5 Pro or Xbox Series X/S.
  • All official gameplay so far, including the Extended Look, ran at 30fps on a base PS5.
  • Leaked development images hint at fidelity and performance modes, but they are unconfirmed and may be from older builds.
  • Analysts say the limit is the consoles' processor, so the PS5 Pro is more likely to bring sharper visuals than double the frame rate.
Quick read · 2 min

GTA 6 is not confirmed to run at 60fps on PS5, PS5 Pro or Xbox. Every bit of official gameplay, including the 27-minute Extended Look, ran at 30fps on a standard PS5, and Rockstar hasn't announced any performance mode ahead of the November 19 launch.

Late October leaks hint that development builds tested fidelity and performance modes, but the images are blurry, possibly old and unconfirmed. Analysts say the real limit is the console processor, which runs the city's traffic, crowds and physics. Because the PS5 Pro uses nearly the same CPU, it's expected to bring sharper visuals rather than double the frame rate.

  • Base PS5: 30fps, about 1440p upscaled to 4K.
  • PS5 Pro: likely 30fps with a cleaner image, maybe a 40fps mode on 120Hz TVs.
  • Xbox Series X/S: no performance details yet.

Don't buy new hardware for 60fps alone. The answer will be clear when the game arrives.

Is GTA 6 60fps on PS5? Right now, the honest answer is no: every piece of official gameplay Rockstar has shown, including its 27-minute Extended Look, runs at 30 frames per second on a standard PS5. Rockstar Games hasn’t confirmed a 60fps mode for any console, and with the game due on November 19, it still isn’t saying.

That matters if you’re deciding whether to buy a PS5 Pro, a new TV or an Xbox before launch. A smooth 60fps image feels very different in a driving-heavy open world, and plenty of players assumed a big 2026 release would offer it. Leaks and analysts now point in two directions, so here’s what’s solid, what’s rumor, and what you should do with your money.

01

Is GTA 6 60fps on PS5 at launch?

Nothing official says GTA 6 will run at 60fps on PS5 at launch, and the footage says 30fps. The Extended Look, shown on Netflix and YouTube and offered as a raw download by Rockstar, was locked to 30fps throughout, and the studio’s own launch trailer was also captured on a PS5.

Rockstar’s silence goes further than frame rates. It hasn’t spelled out resolution targets, ray tracing details or which graphics presets players will get. The PlayStation Store listing confirms features like fast loading, DualSense haptics and Tempest 3D audio, but it says nothing about performance.

One hint came from Brazil. Davy Jones, a YouTuber with the channel Flow Games, says he asked Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson about a performance mode during a studio visit, and that Nelson said it would need to be checked with the technical team. That’s a secondhand report, not a statement from Rockstar, and it leaves the door open rather than closing it.

What the leaked performance mode really shows

The newest reason for hope came in late October, when a social media user called Frizky reexamined two older leaks. One is a blurry image of graphics debugging data on an Xbox that lists a fidelity mode at a resolution between 1440p and 2160p. The other is a gameplay clip from a 2023 leak, which Frizky believes shows signs of a performance mode in an earlier build.

Treat this carefully. Both images are low quality, both come from development builds that may be years old, and the claim that the 2023 clip came from a Rockstar developer’s relative was never confirmed. A menu option existing in an early build doesn’t mean it survived to the final game. Developers often test modes and drop them.

Still, the idea of two presets, one for the best image and one for smoother play, is now standard on PS5 and Xbox. If Rockstar ships a performance option, the realistic target many analysts mention is 40fps, not 60.

Why the PS5 Pro probably won’t double the frame rate

The PS5 Pro is unlikely to make GTA 6 run at 60fps because the bottleneck is the processor, not the graphics chip. Sony’s Pro model boosts the GPU a lot but barely touches the CPU, and Rockstar’s worlds lean hard on the CPU.

Here’s how Sony’s numbers stack up against the base PS5:

  • GPU compute units: 67% more on the Pro.
  • Memory bandwidth: 28% faster.
  • Overall rendering: roughly 45% faster, by Sony’s estimate.
  • CPU: the same chip, running only about 10% faster.

Think of it this way. The GPU paints each frame, while the CPU runs the city: every pedestrian, car, boat, police chase and physics reaction. GTA 6 crams in more of that than any Rockstar game before it, and you can cross the map far faster than in a typical role-playing game. If the CPU needs 33.3 milliseconds to simulate one frame, you’re capped at 30fps no matter how fast the GPU is. Hitting 60fps means doing all that work in 16.7 milliseconds.

The graphics analysts at Digital Foundry studied the Extended Look and called a 60fps console version “extremely unlikely”. They found the base PS5 rendering at about 1440p, upscaled to 4K, with a very stable 30fps and no visible drops. Their read is that Rockstar has carefully filled every bit of the hardware already, which leaves little room to double the frame rate later without cutting back the world.

PS5 vs PS5 Pro vs Xbox: what each console will likely get

GTA 6 is listed as a PS5 Pro Enhanced game, so Pro owners should get something extra, even though Rockstar hasn’t said what. Based on what analysts expect, the likely picture looks like this:

  • Base PS5: 30fps, around 1440p before upscaling to a 4K output, matching the footage shown so far.
  • PS5 Pro: most likely still 30fps, but with a sharper image from Sony’s PSSR AI upscaler and possibly better ray-traced lighting and reflections. A 40fps mode is the most hopeful outcome analysts float.
  • Xbox Series X: launches the same day; the leaked debug image suggests a fidelity mode exists, but no performance details are official.
  • Xbox Series S: also confirmed for launch, with no performance details at all. Given its weaker hardware, expect 30fps at a lower resolution.

Rockstar’s history backs the cautious view. GTA 4, GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 all launched at 30fps on consoles. GTA 5 only gained a 60fps option years later, on newer hardware.

05

How the 40fps mode would work, and who could use it

A 40fps mode would only help people with a 120Hz TV or monitor. On those screens, 40 frames divides evenly into the refresh rate, so motion looks clearly smoother than 30fps while asking far less of the CPU than 60fps would. Several big PS5 games already offer this kind of setting.

If your TV is an older 60Hz set, a 40fps mode wouldn’t appear or wouldn’t look right, and you’d stick with 30fps either way. Check your TV’s spec sheet for a 120Hz panel before getting your hopes up.

06

What this means for your console budget

If you already own a PS5, upgrading to a PS5 Pro just for a chance at 60fps in GTA 6 is a gamble. You’d likely get a cleaner, crisper image and better lighting, which some players will love, but probably not double the smoothness.

If you’re buying your first console, the Pro does bring a 2TB drive and more graphics headroom for years of demanding games, which counts for a lot when a single game can be this big. Just don’t buy it on the promise of a frame rate Rockstar hasn’t announced.

And if 60fps is a must for you, the likely route is the PC version, which Rockstar hasn’t dated. Even there, Digital Foundry warns that the CPU load could make 60fps hard without a recent high-end processor.

The clearest answer should come soon. Reviewers reportedly have copies already, though Rockstar watermarks them to stop details leaking, and the full picture will be obvious the moment players boot the game on November 19.

Quick answers

Is GTA 6 60fps on PS5 Pro?

Not confirmed. Analysts expect 30fps with sharper visuals, and possibly a 40fps option for 120Hz screens, because the Pro uses nearly the same CPU as the base PS5.

Why is GTA 6 not 60fps?

Its huge, busy world puts a heavy load on the console processor. Rockstar appears to have chosen maximum detail at a steady 30fps rather than a smoother but simpler world.

Could Rockstar add 60fps later?

It’s possible on future hardware or PC, as happened with GTA 5, but analysts say current consoles have little power left to spare.
