The short version

  • Google says its fix for the Pixel Watch battery drain bug is rolling out now and should reach everyone within a couple of days.
  • The fix arrives as app updates, so owners can install it early from the Play Store on the watch itself.
  • Owner reports cover the Pixel Watch 2, 3, 4 and 5, with some watches lasting only about 12 hours on a charge.
  • Google has not named the cause or the app involved, and a factory reset remains a last resort rather than a fix.

Pixel Watch owners whose batteries suddenly started dying in about 12 hours can finally do something about it. Google says its fix is rolling out now and should reach all watches over the next couple of days.

The fix comes as app updates, so you don't have to wait. On the watch, open the Play Store and install all pending app updates. Update the Pixel Watch app on your phone too, then restart the watch and check the battery after a normal night.

  • Affected models, going by owner reports: Pixel Watch 2, 3, 4 and 5.
  • Google hasn't said what caused the drain or which app was at fault.
  • Battery Saver, Bedtime mode and turning off tilt-to-wake can help while you wait.

Hold off on a factory reset. It worked for only some owners and wipes the watch, so try the updates first and give the rollout a few days.

If your Pixel Watch battery is draining fast this week, the cure is probably already sitting in the Play Store on your wrist. Google has started pushing out a fix for the drain bug that has been killing Pixel Watches in half a day, and it says the rollout will finish over the next couple of days.

The useful part for you: the fix is delivered through app updates, not a full watch system update. That means you don’t have to wait for your watch to be picked. You can grab it yourself in about a minute, and if your watch went from lasting a day or two to dying before dinner, that minute is worth spending right now.

Pixel Watch battery draining fast? Here’s what Google is shipping

Google’s answer is a set of app updates for the watch that it says resolves the drain affecting what it called a small number of Pixel Watch users. The company confirmed the rollout this week, roughly five days after it first admitted the problem in owner threads on Reddit and said it was working on a fix as soon as possible.

What Google still hasn’t said is just as telling. It hasn’t named the cause, it hasn’t said which app was misbehaving, and it hasn’t given a count of affected watches. So if your watch is fine, nothing here should worry you. If it isn’t, updating is the one step that targets the actual bug.

How to get the fix on your watch right now

The quickest route is to update every app on the watch by hand instead of waiting for automatic updates to trickle in. Here’s the order that makes sense:

  1. Put the watch on its charger or make sure it has a decent charge, and check it’s connected to your phone or Wi-Fi.
  2. Open the Play Store on the watch itself and install every app update it offers, then let them all finish.
  3. On your phone, open the Play Store and make sure the Pixel Watch app is up to date as well, since it handles the link between the two devices.
  4. Restart the watch once the updates are done, so the new versions start fresh.

Then give it a fair test. Before you go to bed, open the Battery page in the watch’s settings and note the percentage. Check it again after a normal night. If the overnight drop is back to what you used to see, you’re done.

Which Pixel Watch models have the battery drain bug

Owner reports cover four generations: the Pixel Watch 2, Pixel Watch 3, Pixel Watch 4 and the current Pixel Watch 5. The original Pixel Watch hasn’t really shown up in the complaints. Google’s own statement didn’t list models, so that range comes from what owners posted.

The spread is the giveaway. When brand-new watches and three-year-old watches all start failing in the same week, a worn-out battery isn’t the likely story. A shared piece of software is.

The symptoms people described were dramatic:

  • A Pixel Watch 2 owner who normally got close to 48 hours with the always-on screen off said they were suddenly getting about 12.
  • A Pixel Watch 4 owner used to around 2.5 days said the watch now lasted less than one.
  • Others saw the charge fall by as much as 20% every few hours, even with the watch sitting idle on a desk.
  • One Pixel Watch 4 owner went to sleep at full charge with sleep mode on and woke up with well under half left.

Before Google stepped in, owners guessed at causes. The September 2026 watch update, which brought Gemini Personalization to the Pixel Watch 2 and newer, was one suspect. Recent Google Health changes, such as automatic activity tracking, were another. Neither has been confirmed.

Is it the bug or just an old battery?

Compare your watch with what Google says it should do. On its help pages, Google rates older Pixel Watch models at up to 24 hours with the always-on display running. The Pixel Watch 4 and 5 in the 41mm size are rated at up to 30 hours, and the 45mm versions at up to 40 hours, again with the always-on display on.

Against those numbers, a watch that dies in about 12 hours of light use is not having an off day. Three signs point to this bug rather than battery wear:

  • The drop happened suddenly, over a few days, not slowly over months.
  • The watch drains fast even when you aren’t using it.
  • Turning off the always-on display barely changes anything, which is what affected owners reported.

A slow decline on a Pixel Watch 2 is different. That watch is old enough that normal battery aging can play a part, and an app update won’t bring back lost capacity.

Still draining after the update? Try these next

If the updates don’t help straight away, remember the rollout runs over a couple of days, so check the watch’s Play Store for app updates again tomorrow. Meanwhile, Google’s own battery settings can buy you hours:

  • Battery Saver: you’ll find it under Battery in the watch’s settings. It switches off the always-on display, limits background activity and can delay notifications, while keeping tilt-to-wake and core health tracking running. It also turns on by itself at 15%.
  • Tilt-to-wake: turning this off in the Gestures section stops the screen lighting up every time you move your wrist.
  • Bedtime mode: if you sleep with the watch on, this keeps the screen and wake gestures off overnight and silences all but alarms and priority callers.
  • Mobile data on LTE models: set it to automatic or off when you don’t need a cellular link, though off means some features, like calls while your phone is out of reach, won’t work.

Google says Battery Saver alone can stretch a full charge to up to 36 hours on the Pixel Watch 3, up to 48 hours on the 41mm Pixel Watch 4 and 5, and up to 72 hours on the 45mm models. That won’t happen while the bug is active, but it shows how much headroom the mode gives you.

What about a factory reset? Some owners said a clean reset, set up without restoring a backup, brought their battery life back. Others saw no change. A reset wipes the watch, so you’d be setting everything up again for a result that isn’t guaranteed. Now that a real fix exists, save the reset for later and only if the drain survives the updates.

What this means for Pixel Watch owners

For most people, the practical answer is simple: update the watch apps today and expect normal battery life back within a few days. You shouldn’t need a repair, a new battery or a replacement watch for this.

The bigger lesson is about how these watches are built. A single app-level change was enough to cut battery life by three quarters on four generations of hardware at once. It isn’t the first time this year either. Pixel phones went through their own battery drain bugs, and an earlier Pixel Watch 3 and 4 update disrupted blood oxygen and skin temperature readings for a while.

If you were about to buy a Pixel Watch, this shouldn’t change the decision, but it’s a good reason to keep automatic app updates switched on once you own one. And if your watch is still dying in half a day after a full round of updates and a restart, contact Google support, because at that point the problem may not be this bug at all.

Quick answers

Why is my Pixel Watch battery draining so fast?

Most likely a software bug that hit the Pixel Watch 2 through 5 in late October. Google hasn’t named the cause, but it is now rolling out a fix through app updates.

How do I install the Pixel Watch battery fix?

Open the Play Store on the watch and install its pending app updates. Also update the Pixel Watch app on your phone, then restart the watch.

Should I factory reset my Pixel Watch to fix the battery?

Not first. Resets helped only some owners and wipe the watch. Install the app updates, wait a couple of days, and reset only if the drain continues.
