Nicholas Boulton is the voice of the Professor in Sublustrum. A trailer posted on PlayStation's YouTube channel in mid-October confirmed the casting and showed off new areas, strange machines and listening-based puzzles.

Sublustrum is a full 3D remake of a 2008 cult adventure, released outside Russia and Poland as Outcry. You play a writer who climbs into his missing brother's machine and enters a dream world made of memories. Sound is the core mechanic: you tune frequencies, follow voices through static and play a huge musical instrument to get through one area.

  • Developer: Phantomery Interactive, the original team; publisher Brickworks Games.
  • A free Chapter One playtest ran on Steam from October 12 to October 25.
  • Release is planned for fall 2026 on PC and consoles, with no price or exact date yet.

If you like slow, moody puzzle games, wishlist it on Steam to get an alert when it launches.

The voice guiding you through Sublustrum’s dream world belongs to Nicholas Boulton. A new trailer for the psychological adventure, posted on PlayStation’s official YouTube channel in mid-October, names Boulton as the Professor, one of the few characters you actually hear as you hunt for a missing scientist inside his own strange machine.

If you searched for the Sublustrum voice actor, that is the answer. But the trailer also marked the start of a free playtest and a push toward a fall 2026 launch, so it is worth knowing what kind of game Boulton’s character lives in, and whether it is something you will want on your console or PC.

01

Who voices the Professor in the Sublustrum PS5 trailer

Nicholas Boulton voices the Professor. The trailer’s description says so directly, and it is the only cast member named so far. The studio has not shared a full cast list or said how big the role is, so treat any longer list you see online with caution until the developers publish one.

The Professor matters because Sublustrum is a lonely game. You spend most of it on your own, piecing together clues from objects, machines and sounds. A recurring voice in that kind of world carries a lot of the story, which is likely why the developers chose to lead this trailer with his name.

Beyond the casting, the clip shows new locations, odd machinery and puzzles that lean on watching closely, testing ideas and listening carefully. There is no combat on show and nothing that looks like a shooter. This is a slow, thoughtful mystery.

A remake of a cult 2008 game you may know as Outcry

Sublustrum is not a brand-new idea. It is a ground-up remake of a 2008 adventure of the same name, which was sold outside Russia and Poland under the title Outcry. That original won Best Adventure Game and Best Sound Design at the KRI Awards and built a small, loyal following.

The remake comes from Phantomery Interactive, the team that made the first game, with Brickworks Games as publisher. It was first announced in late November 2025. The original used fixed screens, the way many adventure games of that era did. The new version lets you walk freely through fully 3D, photo-realistic spaces, and it adds puzzles that were not in the 2008 release along with a longer story.

The developers say the team includes people who have worked on PUBG, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Ubisoft games and Ice-Pick Lodge.

What the story is about

You play a writer who arrives at his brother’s apartment and finds him gone. The only thing left behind is his last experiment: a machine designed to send a person deep into their own subconscious. You repair it, climb in and follow him into what the game calls the Flickering World.

That world is built from memory and dreams. Expect a mix of ornate Victorian machines, factory-like structures and early 20th century science fiction styling, all shot through a filter meant to look like old film and vintage camera lenses. The places shift and overlap as the story goes on, mirroring a mind that is coming apart.

The developers describe the plot as working like a session with a psychoanalyst, drawing on the ideas of Carl Jung and the dreamlike unease of Franz Kafka’s fiction. Under the puzzles, it is a story about grief: losing someone, failing to change what happened and slowly learning to let go.

04

Why sound is the main mechanic

In most games, audio sets the mood. In Sublustrum, it is how you solve things. You tune radio frequencies, follow voices through static and work out what you are hearing. One whole area is a giant musical instrument that you have to play and tune before it lets you pass. Other puzzles twist gravity or bend time.

That focus goes back to the game’s roots. Sublustrum started life as an interactive music project by Anthesteria, a dark ambient act that co-composed music for the Metro 2033 soundtrack. The brooding score is part of the story, not background filler.

The practical upshot: this is a game to play with good headphones or a decent speaker setup. If you usually play with the sound low or muted, you will struggle with some puzzles.

05

What it means for PS5 and PC players

The trailer appeared on PlayStation’s own channel, and the publisher has said from the start that Sublustrum is coming to consoles as well as PC. The PC version is the one with a confirmed store page on Steam. The developers have not yet said which consoles get it on day one or whether every version launches together, so PS5 owners should wait for a firm date before planning around it.

No price has been announced. Launch is planned for fall 2026, and no exact day has been given in the announcements so far. That is a tight window with only a few weeks of fall left, so a date announcement, or a slip into next year, could come soon.

For players who enjoy slow, atmospheric puzzle games like the original Outcry, this is one to watch. If you want action, it probably is not for you.

06

How the free playtest worked

Alongside the trailer, the studio opened a free playtest on Steam that ran from October 12 to October 25, 2026. Anyone could request access, and it covered Chapter One of the game. That test has now closed. If you missed it, the easiest way to hear about the next build or the release date is to add Sublustrum to your Steam wishlist, so Steam can alert you when it launches.
