How to edit a PDF in Gemini: the steps, and the one big limit

Google's Gemini app now lets you build a PDF in the chat, then type changes or highlight a passage for the AI to rewrite. Here's how, and where it stops.

The short version

  • Google's Gemini app now lets you generate, preview and edit files, including PDFs, directly inside a chat.
  • You can type edits yourself in full-screen view or highlight text and ask Gemini to change words or visuals.
  • PDF editing works on the web and on mobile; Docs, Sheets, slides, Markdown, TXT and code editing are web-only.
  • The feature is available to all Gemini app users in every language the app supports.

Google's Gemini app can now create, preview and edit files directly inside a chat, and PDFs are the headline format. Ask Gemini for a PDF, open the preview, then either type changes yourself in full-screen view or highlight a passage and ask Gemini to rewrite the text or change a visual.

  • PDF editing works on both the web and the mobile app.
  • Docs, Sheets, slides, Markdown, TXT and code editing work only on the web.
  • When you're done, export the file in the format you need, including Word, Excel or LaTeX.

Google says the feature is available to every Gemini app user in all supported languages. It's built for files Gemini creates in your chat, so for signed contracts or scanned forms, a regular PDF editor is still the better tool.

You can now edit a PDF in Gemini without leaving the chat. Google has added a built-in file editor to the Gemini app: ask it to make a PDF, open the preview, then either type your own fixes in full-screen view or highlight a passage and tell Gemini what to change, including the visuals.

That matters if you’ve ever bounced between a chatbot, a word processor and a PDF tool just to fix one heading. Google says the feature is available to all Gemini app users, in every language the app supports, which includes the US, UK and Canada. PDFs are the one format you can edit on your phone as well as the web. Here’s how to do it, plus the limit that will trip some people up.

01

How to edit a PDF in Gemini, step by step

  1. Open the Gemini app or Gemini on the web. PDF previews and edits work on both the web and the mobile app.
  2. Give Gemini your material. Upload what you’re starting from, such as photos of handwritten lecture notes, or simply describe the document you want.
  3. Ask for a PDF. Be specific, for example: make a two-page PDF study guide from these notes with a summary box on each page.
  4. Open the preview. The file appears inside the chat, so you can check it before downloading anything.
  5. Fix small things yourself. Expand the preview to full screen and type directly into the document, the fastest way to correct a name, a date or a typo.
  6. Let Gemini handle bigger changes. Highlight a section and ask Gemini to rewrite it, shorten it or change a visual. You can also highlight text just to ask a question about it.
  7. Export it. Use the export button to download the finished file in the format you need.

Google’s own example is a good template: upload handwritten class notes, ask for a study guide as a PDF, then tidy it by hand and use highlights for anything you want reworded.

The one big limit: editing other formats needs a computer

PDFs are the exception on mobile. Every other editable format works only on the web version of Gemini. That covers:

  • Google Docs and Google Sheets files
  • slide decks
  • plain-text TXT files and Markdown files
  • code

So if you ask for a spreadsheet on your phone, plan to open Gemini in a browser to make changes inside the editor. A workaround on mobile is to ask for the content as a PDF first, edit that, and convert it later.

There’s a second, quieter limit. Google’s announcement is about files Gemini creates or reworks inside your chat. It doesn’t promise a full PDF editor for any file you upload, the way a dedicated PDF app would let you edit a signed contract or a scanned form. For those jobs, a traditional PDF tool is still the safer choice.

Which file types Gemini can create and export

Gemini gained file creation earlier this year. Since then, you can ask for a file in the chat and download it in a long list of formats, including:

  • Microsoft Word and Excel files
  • Google Docs, Sheets and Slides
  • PDF, CSV, RTF and TXT
  • Markdown and LaTeX, the typesetting system scientists and students use for papers and equations

The new part is what happens before you download. Until now, you had to export a file and open it somewhere else to change it. Now the preview, the edits and the follow-up questions all happen in the same conversation.

Tips for cleaner results

  • Start with structure. Tell Gemini the number of pages, the headings and the tone you want. It’s easier to edit a good outline than to rescue a messy draft.
  • Type small fixes, prompt big ones. Asking the AI to change a single date risks it rewording the sentence around it. Do tiny edits by hand.
  • Check every fact. If Gemini built the PDF from your notes, compare names, numbers and dates against the originals before you share it.
  • Keep sensitive files out. Think twice before uploading medical, financial or work documents you wouldn’t want stored in an AI chat.

Already using Google Drive or Docs? Two related tricks

If your PDF already lives in Google Drive, Gemini can help there too. Double-click a PDF in Drive and a summary card can appear beside it with suggested next steps, such as drafting a proposal from it. That feature needs a paid plan, such as Google AI Pro or Ultra, or an eligible Workspace business, enterprise or education subscription.

Inside Google Docs, Gemini now sits in a chat-style box at the bottom of a new document. You can describe the document you want, pull in material from Gmail, Google Chat, other files or the web, then highlight sections to request changes. Google says these suggestions stay private until you approve them.
