This is the biggest reason to pause. Within days of the Duo reaching buyers on October 23, some owners reported cracks and lines on the inner screen, usually down the middle or toward the right side. On October 26, Apple said the problem affects a small number of units and told owners to contact AppleCare for a replacement.
This week Apple went further and sent a memo to its stores and authorized service providers telling technicians to inspect affected phones and repair or replace them under normal procedures. Apple says most units aren’t at risk, and that phones with the flaw tend to show it soon after you start using them. There’s no recall and no public repair program page yet. iFixit thinks a faulty hinge is to blame, but Apple hasn’t named a cause.
What that means for you in practice:
- If you buy a Duo, use it heavily in the first weeks, so any defect shows up while you’re well inside the warranty.
- Think hard about AppleCare+. Fixing inner display damage costs $999 without it in the US, against a $99 service fee with it. A scratched top cover layer costs $49, or $19 with AppleCare+.
- If you see lines, feel a bump at the crease or hear a crunch, contact AppleCare or book a store visit. Owners in the US and Canada have the same support path.
The Pro Max has none of these questions. It uses the same proven design as the iPhone 17 Pro Max.
Can you even get an iPhone Duo right now?
Not quickly. The first Duo allocations sold out fast. As of launch day, Apple quoted January 22, 2027 for a 256GB Duo in the US and January 25, 2027 in the UK. Apple called demand nothing short of extraordinary, and earlier reports pointed to low production yields as well. Walk-in stock exists in small amounts, so checking your local Apple Store each morning can work. The iPhone 18 Pro Max, by contrast, has been on sale since September.
