Permanent pins came as one of four changes WhatsApp announced last week, all aimed at groups that pile up hundreds of messages in a few hours.
- A Mentions and replies filter. Swipe down on your chat list to open the filters, and a new button sits alongside Unread, Favorites and Groups. It shows only unread group chats where someone mentioned you, replied straight to your message or used @all. It covers community chats too, and you can remove the filter if you don’t want it.
- Group Status. You can now post a Status update that only one group sees, instead of your whole contact list. Members can view it, react and add their own, and it disappears after 24 hours like a normal Status.
- Catch-up history for newcomers. WhatsApp already let you share recent messages when adding someone to a group. Now you can send that recent history after they’ve joined, by tapping their name in the chat. Those messages stay end-to-end encrypted, meaning only the people in the chat can read them.
Separately, WhatsApp is testing smarter actions on long-press. Hold a message containing an email address, phone number, street address or meeting time, and the app offers a matching shortcut, such as starting an email, saving a contact or adding a calendar entry. That one is also appearing for only some users so far.
Put together, the changes make a practical setup for a busy family or club group: one permanent pin with the standing rules or address, a timed pin for this week’s plan, the mentions filter so you only open the chats that need you, and catch-up history for anyone added late, since they won’t see earlier pins on their own.
